Getting Plastered

Two months on and I had my plaster cast made. It was a mystery to me as to what was going to happen, but the following photo's should help others understand.

Protect the Clothing

First the leg and body are wrapped up in cling film to protect the clothing and also aid in getting the cast off once it has set. Bandages are wrapped under the crutch as it is difficult to cover this area with cling film.

Plaster of Paris

Plaster bandage is soaked in water and then wrapped around the leg and body until there are several layers in place. This initially was quite cool on a hot summers day, but as the plaster dries it becomes very hot.

Once dry measurements are taken and marks put on the cast to indicate where the bones in the thigh and bottom are. This is because the cup is shaped so that you sit on it with your leg in it. This prevents the pressure being put on the end of the stump. The cast is then carefully removed and  this is used to make a mould onto which the cup is made that will fit over my stump.
